A method for verifying two fingerprints involves obtaining a list (LI3) from the minutiae of two fingerprints with a limited number (i) of potentially corresponding minutiae pairs, from which the number (M) of actual corresponding minutiae pairs of the two finger prints is ascertained, in which the measure (S) for correspondence of the two fingerprints is given according to a specific formula. The measure (S) for correspondence of the two fingerprints is given by formula (I): S = 2M/((K+L)f(r)) - (I). M = Number of corresponding minutiae found in limited list; K = Number of minutiae of first fingerprint; L = Number of minutiae of second fingerprint; r = Scaling factor.
