PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in dispersibility, film coating smoothness, electromagnetic conversion property, durability and long-term preservability, in which an MR head erodes little and which has slight influence on environment when incinerated. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has an underlayer containing inorganic powder and/or magnetic powder and a bonding agent formed on a non-magnetic support and at least one layer of a magnetic layer in which ferromagnetic fine powder and a bonding agent are dispersed on the underlayer. The bonding agent of the underlayer is obtained by using the following acrylic copolymer together with polyurethane resin which is obtained by reacting polyol compound having a cyclic structure and long-chain alkyl chain with organic diisocyanate and has a hydrophilic polar group. The acrylic copolymer contains as raw material a radical polymerizable monomer having nitrogen by 45 to 80 mass % to the sum totals of a monomer and (meta) acrylate monomer having alkyl (meta) acrylate and/or a benzene ring and is obtained by copolymerizing them and has a hydrophilic polar group in a molecule.
