PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone attempted to be applied, for example, as a perfume or a flavor for cosmetics or foods or as a solvent for lacquers or varnishes. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone comprises bringing a crude 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone containing a 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone represented by formula (1) (wherein n is an integer of≥1) into contact with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonate. According to this method, it is possible to effectively purify crude 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactones obtained from a variety of reactions to reduce their orders. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
