PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester favorable in color tone, very slight in spinneret deposition even if subjected to melt spinning continuously for a long period of time through a spinneret, having high performance of good formability, and giving polyester fibers of improved clearness. SOLUTION: The polyester is produced by melt kneading a polyester obtained using, as a catalyst for the polycondensation reaction, a deposit obtained by heating a titanium compound and a phosphorus compound in a glycol, with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt soluble to the polyester.
