<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface lighting device capable of performing control of the directivity of outgoing light from a light source, and capable of increasing the efficiency of utilization of the outgoing light in a liquid crystal display; to realize high luminance, an appropriate angle of field, high contrast, etc., and reduction of power consumption and the cost of the surface lighting device; and to provide a liquid crystal display device using it. <P>SOLUTION: The surface lighting device is provided with a cabinet 7 whose at least one surface is in an open state or in an optically transmittable state and the other surface insides have light reflecting properties, a plurality of cylindrical light sources 4 in the cabinet 7, light reflecting members 6 formed around the light sources 4 and having longitudinal openings 5, and a lens array sheet 3 which has a plurality of near Fresnel lenses 2 and arranges the lenses so that their centers are at positions facing the light sources 4.
