PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having high display grade by preventing mixing of foreign matters into a display region when a rubbing treatment is performed in a manufacturing step. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having a pair of substrates 1 and 3 having an alignment film 5 formed on respective surfaces thereof, wherein a pair of the substrates 1 and 3 are stuck to each other so that the surfaces on which the alignment film 5 is formed are opposed to each other by using a member 8 holding the distance between the both substrates and a liquid crystal layer 6 is encapsulated in the gap between both substrates, protrusions 9 are formed along an outer edge of the alignment film 5 on at least one substrate.
