PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that an opening and closing timing may not be optimally controlled owing to a portion not corresponding to a manipulated variable of an acceleration pedal by a suction pipe pressure, when determining the opening and closing timing of a suction valve with the suction pipe and an engine rotational speed in an adjustable valve timing control method. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine capable of controlling the opening and closing timing of the suction valve and an exhaust valve, the opening and closing timing of at least either suction valve or exhaust valve is controlled by a target manipulated variable set corresponding to an operation state to obtain the opening and closing timing corresponding to the operation state. When a throttle opening is less than a predetermined opening set corresponding to an negative range up to a whole load range, the target manipulated variable is determined based on the suction pipe and the engine rotational number. When the throttle opening is not less than the predetermined opening, the target manipulated variable is determined based on the suction pipe pressure and the engine rotational speed.
