PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane filtration apparatus constituted so that the breaking of a membrane can be detected surely and to provide a method for operating the membrane filtration apparatus. SOLUTION: This membrane filtration apparatus is provided with a hollow fiber membrane module, a valve mechanism to be opened/closed when the module is washed, a raw water supplying mechanism, a filtrate guiding mechanism, a membrane module washing mechanism consisting of a mechanism 68 for sending washing air from the primary side of the module and another mechanism 76 for sending backwashing water from the secondary side, a pressure detection mechanism 66 for detecting the rising degree of the pressure of the washing air to be supplied to the primary side and a ventilation pipe 80 for discharging to the atmosphere the washing air leaking when the membrane is broken. When the module is washed, the valve mechanism is opened and the mechanisms 68 and 76 are actuated at the same time and then backwashing and air washing are performed at the same time. When the breaking of the membrane is detected after the backwashing and air washing are performed, the valve mechanism is closed, the mechanism 76 is stopped, a flow passage of the pipe 80 is opened and the mechanism 66 is caused to detect the rising degree of the pressure of the washing air.
