<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by which detection accuracy of toner concentration is improved and an image of high image quality is formed. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has an image carrier 5 which carries an toner image and has first glossiness in a first direction (a) and second glossiness being lower than the first glossiness in a second direction (b), and an optical detection means 11 which has a light emitting means 111 and a light receiving means 112 and in which light beams emitted from the light emitting means 111 are reflected by the image carrier 5 and the reflected light beams are received by the light receiving means 112.
