PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of shading the external light and leakage light of the scanning ray from inside the apparatus without the need for an original platen cover and to provide a control method of the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 200 under an original read face of an original platen transparent plate 104 has a plurality of liquid crystal cells each of which is an active matrix liquid crystal having at least two states; a light shield state and a transparent state. In the case of emitting a scanning ray from a light source 106 to an original, the control section 300 controls a liquid crystal shutter window that brings the liquid crystal cell of the liquid crystal layer under an original region covered by an original placed on the original platen transparent plate 104 into the transparent state and brings the liquid crystal cells other than the original region into the light shield state. The image reading apparatus applies image correction processing such as copying surrounding image data and embedding the data to a shade pattern and gradation processing to the shade pattern of an opaque structure included in a read image.
