PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the throughput of reading processing, by saving the position of a white reference plate for prescan so as not to be contaminated with ink, obtaining a proper shading correction data, and performing the prescan, when moving to a reading position. SOLUTION: In an image record reading apparatus, a portion of a record paper transmission path for conveying recording paper 2 is provided as a common path to a portion of a manuscript transmission path for conveying a manuscript. In a reading unit 28, a white reference plate 25 is provided for the shading correction used when performing the prescan. When performing recording processing, the reading unit 28 and the white reference plate are moved, to save positions so as not to be contaminated with ink. Meanwhile, when performing the prescan, in parallel with moving the reading unit 28 and the white reference plate 25 from the save positions to the reading positions, the prescan is performed.
