A system for removing flotsam from a flowing waterway has a floating gangway (1) secured between one bank and a weir to protect the water intake into a hydro station or into a mill. A dump gate (5) is fitted to the weir near to the bottom of the gangway to enable operators to spill out any natural flotsam, after removal of damaging flotsam, e.g. bottles and large objects.
