Measurement device comprises a gear assembly that couples a coil (8) for winding a measurement tape (3) to a tensioning spring that is tightened as the tape is unwound from the coil. The spring is rigidly supported at one end on the measurement device housing and has its other end connected to a gear wheel (10) of the gear assembly (10, 11). Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a sprung winding device; (b) a method for winding a measurement tape in and out and; (c) an extendible plumb line.
