PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compute the settlement, stress and allowable unit stress of the multilayer ground by making a settlement analysis and a stress analysis of the ground using the test result based on sounding of the ground. SOLUTION: First, the instant settlement is approximately computed by providing a method of using an equivalent elastic modulus anew while generalizing the method of Barber in the two-layer ground to the multilayer ground to include the influence of rigidity for every layer of the ground quantitatively in settlement calculation. Second, a new method of approximately computing vertical stress using equivalent conversion thickness regarding vertical stress in the multilayer ground is provided. Third, vertical stress is obtained using a stress analysis method based on the equivalent conversion thickness shown in the second method regarding consolidation settlement, and the consolidation settlement of the multilayer ground is computed using the vertical stress. Fourth, the stress-strain relation and load-settlement relation in the ground are modeled to compute the allowable unit stress of the multilayer ground. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
