The device has a locking element with at least one spring-loaded tooth and a counter tooth fixed to rotate with the steering column. A locking element carriage is movable in a guide transversely to the steering column axis between locking and release positions by an eccentric element. The sliding locking element is movable in the carriage between end stops at an angle to the carriage movement direction with the locking tooth on its protruding end.
