PURPOSE: A monitor self test apparatus and method are provided to carry out a self test when a PC monitor displays no image to judge whether the monitor has a problem or a PC has a problem. CONSTITUTION: A monitor self test apparatus includes a microcomputer(25), a test signal output unit(26), and a display(27). The microcomputer generates a test signal for monitor self test and judges whether a monitor has a problem or a PC has a problem from a variation in an automatic beam level in response to the test signal. The test signal output unit outputs the test signal for self test. The display displays a self test result of the microcomputer to a user. The microcomputer applies RGB signals to a pre-amplifier(21) included in the monitor as the test signal.
