A tensioner with a pivot-arm that is free to move toward a belt of a be lt drive system to tighten the belt and is also free to move away from the belt a predetermined amount to slacken the belt and adjust belt tension while avoiding tooth jump in extreme torque reversal situations. An adjustable stop is provided to restrict movement of the pivot-arm and inhibit tooth jump as the tensione r pulley moves to slacken the belt.
