Wood pulp, partic. pulp formed by digesting wood chips in sodium or calcium bisulphite, generally contains 1-2% lignin before bleaching. When the pulp is to be used in the manufacture of viscose rayon, complete bleaching with elemental chlorine is not feasible, as some chlorinated resin is formed. The new technique consists of partially bleaching the pulp with chlorine, and then completing the bleach with chlorine dioxide or hypochlorite. Less chlorination of the resin results. |
