PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization catalyst comprised of a transition metal complex which is highly active and produces an olefin polymer having a high molecular weight. SOLUTION: The transition metal complex is represented by general formula (1) (wherein M is a group 5 element in the periodic table; A and A' are each an alkylene, alkenylene, phenylene, naphthylene or hydrocarbon-substituted silylene group; Y is an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or hydrocarbon-substituted silyl group; X<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, hydrocarbon-substituted silyl, alkoxy, aralkyloxy, aryloxy or hydrocarbon-disubstituted amino group; X<SP>2</SP>is a group 15 element in the periodic table; and R is an alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, aralkyl, aralkyloxy or hydrocarbon-substituted amino group).
