PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing theobroxide, 3, 6-dihydroxy-4, 5-epoxy-1-methylcyclohexene, by a safe chemical synthesis with a simple process as a method for industrially obtaining the compound in large quantities. SOLUTION: The method comprises the following process: Methylhydroquinone is oxidized to form p-toluquinone, which is then epoxidized to produce 4, 5-epoxy-1-methylcyclohexene-3, 6-dione, which is then reduced to obtain the objective theobroxide, i.e. 3, 6-dihydroxy-4, 5-epoxy-1-methylcyclohexene. This method also includes a refining method comprising carrying out a Diels-Alder reaction, using cyclopentadiene, of a by-product formed in epoxidizing the p-toluquinone and isolating the reaction product by chromatography.
