PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To integrally search for descriptions differently described by different producers in management of incompletely formatted document data such as a business trip report and a technical memo. SOLUTION: This document management system is provided with a cutting part cutting out a character string serving as an index of an inputted document with a retrieval type on the basis of cutting rule data, a plurality of format processing part having individual rules for converting the character string into a formal expression and converting the character strings according to their rules, and a format processing control part calling the corresponding format processing part according to the corresponding format rule data for giving an instruction to convert the character string cut out with the retrieval type by the cutting part into a formal expression and outputting the result as a formatted document. An index described by another name or an abbreviated name can be rewritten into an appropriate formal name, and retrieval and analysis can be carried out without any omission.
