PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp device whose lamp can be lighted even when a heater connected in series with the lamp for shortening lighting time is broken. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp device has the heater (4) for heating an arc tube (2) of the lamp (1), which is connected in series with a circuit (9) supplying an electric power from a lamp lighting device (8) to the lamp (1). A heater breaking detection circuit (12) which detects existence of a breaking of the heater (4) at the time of starting lighting of the lamp (1) and a shorting circuit (13) which short-circuits between heater terminals (4a) and (4b) when the breaking of the heater (4) is detected by the heater breaking detection circuit (12) or a voltage applied to the lamp (1) rises to a prescribed value without the detection of the breaking of the heater (4), are installed in the high pressure discharge lamp device.
