The method of assembly of primary and secondary balance shafts (12) in a motor vehicle internal combustion engine crankcase (10) involves, prior to mounting of an external gear pinion (26), placing a low friction coating (46) on one of the two radial surfaces. The coating has a thickness (E1) equal to the required axial play (J1) and which wears away under friction in use.
