KNOCKING DETECTOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a knocking detector for not only accurately detecting knocking but also rapidly detecting heavy knocking. SOLUTION: Pressure in a cylinder is detected by a pressure sensor mounted on the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The occurrence of heavy knocking can be rapidly detected since whether heavy knocking has occurred or not is determined based on the ratio of the maximum value of fluctuating intra-cylinder pressure to a prescribed fraction of the maximum pressure of the intra-cylinder pressure. When heavy knocking is determined to have occurred, damage can be prevented from developing in the engine by immediately performing knocking suppressing measures such as delaying an ignition angle.
