PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk array system in RAID 5 configuration for continuing capacity extending processing, and for restoring data as an RAID system when the failure of one hard disk under the execution of the capacity extending processing occurs due to the addition of any hard disk. SOLUTION: While the capacity extension of an RAID 5 is being executed, a memory on an RAID controller is made to store an extension completion address indicating to what extent capacity extension has been completed. This extension completion address is updated when distributed data are arranged in all hard disks. When the failure of one hard disk occurs, the extension completion address is used to restore the data according to the reconstructing method of the RAID 5. The reconstruction of the hard disks including added hard disks is executed until the extension completion address. After the extension completion address, the reconstruction of the hard disks excluding any added hard disk is executed. After the reconstruction is completed, the capacity extension is continued.
