<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a payment device capable of reading an optical detective code attached to tableware by means of a laser scanner for payment. <P>SOLUTION: A dish carrying the optical detective code is placed on a tray and conveyed to a counter table 17, and when the tray is placed in a predetermined position according to a tray guide, the tray is detected by means of a tray detection means (unshown in the figure). Then, a laser reader 25 is driven by instruction from a controller 24, a laser beam 27 is radiated for laser scanning, and the optical detective code is read. According to reading of the optical detective code in a plurality of positions, the shape, the type, and the number of dishes is specified, and on the basis of this specification, the controller 24 calculates a price and displays the calculation result by a display means in a POS terminal device (unshown in the figure) placed on a top plate 15.
