PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display apparatus having high image forming performance in an illumination optical system. SOLUTION: An elliptical reflector (L2) condenses light from a light source (L1), a rod integrator (t2) uniformizes the spatial energy distribution of the light and emits the light from a rectangular emitting end face (t2), and a color wheel (CW) performs temporal color separation for color display near the emitting end face (t2). An image on the end face (t2) is formed on a panel surface (PS) by an image forming optical system consisting of a relay lens (RL), first and second mirrors (M1 and M2) having power on their reflection surfaces, and a condenser lens (CL) condensing the light just before the panel surface (PS). The reflection surface of the second mirror (M2) has rotationally non-symmetric shape where the radius of curvature corresponding to the long side direction of the end face (t2) is larger than that corresponding to the short side direction of the end face (t2).
