PURPOSE: A method for assigning a storage space in a mobile communication terminal is provided to assign more storage spaces to telephone directories when a terminal user uses the telephone directories more, and to assign more storage spaces to messages if the user uses the messages more, so that the user can optionally designate the storage spaces. CONSTITUTION: If power is applied to a terminal(301), the terminal asks a user whether to designate more telephone directories or more messages(302). If the user wants to designate more telephone directories, the terminal enters a telephone directory designate mode(304), and retrieves the telephone directories and message storage spaces. The terminal decides whether to convert the message storage spaces into storage spaces for the telephone directories(305). If so, the terminal converts the message storage spaces into the telephone directory storage spaces, reduces the number of the storage spaces for the messages, and changes the storage spaces for the telephone directories(307).
