An agent for dyeing keratin fibers (especially human hair) contains as developer component in a cosmetically-acceptable carrier a p-phenylenediamine derivative (I). An agent for dyeing keratin fibers (especially human hair) contains as developer component in a cosmetically-acceptable carrier a p-phenylenediamine derivative of formula (I). R1, R2 = H, methyl, ethyl or 2-hydroxyethyl, with the proviso that at least one is H; R3 = H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C monohydroxyalkyl, 2-4C polyhydroxyalkyl or halogen; X, Y = 1-4C alkylene; and R4, R5 = 1-4C alkyl. An Independent claim is also included for the following compounds as new: (i) N-(4-aminophenyl)diethanolamine dimethyl ether; (ii) N-(4-amino-3-methylphenyl) diethanolamine dimethyl ether; (iii) N-(4-amino-2-methylphenyl) diethanolamine dimethyl ether; (iv) N-(4-aminophenyl) diethanolamine diethyl ether; (v) N-(4-amino-3-methylphenyl) diethanolamine diethyl ether; and (vi) N-(4-amino-2-methylphenyl) diethanolamine diethyl ether.
