A visual indication is provided on a vehicle licence plate 2 indicating that the vehicle is being or has been stolen by altering the appearance of the licence plate. Upon detection of vehicle theft (or damage, tampering etc.) by a convention car alarm system the alphanumeric indicia 2a on the number plate 2 are obliterated by changing the background colour 2b of the plate to match that of the alphanumeric indicia 2a. The numbers and letter may not be completely obscured so that the registration details remain recognisable. The colour change is effected by the thermal material or LCD from which the plate is constructed. The indication may alternatively or additionally include a flashing light on the plate. |
