PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel(PDP) using a selective write and erase is provided to drive the PDP at high speeds as well as improve the contrast of the PDP. CONSTITUTION: A method for driving a plasma display panel by using a selective write and erase includes the steps of: maintaining the discharge of the on-cells by applying a normal sustain pulse to the selected on cells; and supplying the erase initialized pulse set at least one selected among the pulse width and voltage level larger than those of the normal sustain pulse in front of the selective erase sub-fields.
