A humic composition which includes a clathratic, substantially water soluble cellulose component, or any synthetic or natural polymers, and which are substantially free of polyvalent cations. The composition is characterised such that when it is dissolved in water it remains substantially free of any gel-forming, but when polyvalent cations are introduced, it begins thickening. A method of applying the humic composition to a substrate such as a soil and a method of increasing humus in the substrate is also described.
