PURPOSE: An encoder is provided to overall or partially replace a zero number keypad, and to be used with a rotational dial having a smaller surface area than the zero number keypad in size, thereby realizing a low profile user input unit within a wireless telephone. CONSTITUTION: Reflecting surfaces(11) are organized to form a repeated sequence. A reflecting surface(12) having strong reflectivity exists on the reflecting surfaces(11), and a partial reflecting surface(13) is adjacent to the reflecting surface(12). A reflecting surface(14) without reflectivity is adjacent to the reflecting surface(13), while a reflecting surface(15) with strong reflectivity is adjacent to the reflecting surface(14). The reflecting surfaces(11) are formed to reflect a variable amount of infrared rays incident on the reflecting surfaces(11).
