PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide, as for a medical image for example, such as an image processing apparatus that automatically extracts concerned areas necessary for a diagnosis or the like based on the anatomical standard. SOLUTION: The apparatus establishes, for example, an image of a frontal lobe as a concerned area by geometrically processing a tissue color map based on anatomical structural information (a brain surface contour, coupling lines of cerebrum longitudinal fissures that interconnect feature points of longitudinal fissures of an upper cerebrum and those of an lower cerebrum, thin lines of cerebral fluid made by making the cerebral fluid into thin lines, lateral ventricle end-points, lateral fissure end-points, etc.) obtained from an image of the brain surface contour obtained through contour extraction processing by a self-organizing map (SOM) that specifies areas adjacent to a learning area as variable, and from a tissue color map obtained through automatic classification processing of the tissue by the SOM. The established concerned area is displayed and provided to doctors or the like in forms such as cutting out and displaying the concerned area only, displaying the concerned area and other areas in different colors, or displaying tissue of the concerned area by color.
