DATA STREAM PROCESSING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain data stream processing by switching a program or a data set so as to suppress the overhead at the switching without extending the internal memory.

SOLUTION: The description of a program requests switching of a program or a data set, and the program or the data set is transferred from an external memory such as an SDRAM to the internal memory according to the request. The apparatus divides the program and the data set so that the number of times of occurrence of switching is not too much increased and can mount data stream processing without the need for extending the capacity of the internal memory and by suppressing the overhead at the switching. The apparatus can be effectively applied particularly to an MPEG stream consisting of a plurality of layers by dividing the layers into higher-order layers and lower-order layers.
