1,263,739. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions. DART INDUSTRIES Inc. 11 Feb., 1969 [14 Feb., 1968], No. 7394/69. Heading A5B. [Also in Divisions C4 and C5.] A dispenser for surfactant compositions is provided with means to maintain two compositions therein, one isolated from the other, composition (A) comprising a surfactant forming acid and composition (B) comprising a surfactant-forming base, and valve means communicating with each composition whereby the application of pressure to the compositions and actuation of the valve means results in the mixing of portions of each composition and dispensing of the resulting mixture from the container. The surfactant-forming acid may be an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof, an ethoxylated aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms and 5 to 40 ethoxy groups, an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, an alkyl ester of sulphuric acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms, an alkyl ether of a polyethoxyester of sulphuric acid in which the alkyl portion contains at least 10 carbon atoms and the polyethoxy portion contains from 5 to 40 ethoxy groups or an aliphatic amido carboxylic acid containing at least 10 carbon atoms. The surfactant-forming base is an alkali metal hydroxide, borate, phosphate, or carbonate or bicarbonate ammonium hydroxide or an organic base, e.g. morpholine, triethanolamine or aminopropane diol. A heated preparation is dispensed when composition (A) comprises an organic or organic peroxide, perborate or persulphate and composition (B) comprises a reducing agent or catalyst. Specified reducing agents are SO 2 , an alkali metal sulphite, bisulphite, sulphide or thiosulphate, thiourea, 1- phenyl-2-thiobarbituric acid or triethanolammonium sulphite. The catalyst may be silver, lead, iron, chromium, bismuth, copper, titanium, molybdenum, silicon or an oxide or a salt thereof; activated carbon or catalase (enzyme). Alternatively, heat is generated when composition (B) is free from water and contains anhydrous magnesium chloride, aluminium chloride or sodium oxide. Examples relate to shaving creams, both cold and heated, shampoos and a chest rub containing menthol and eucalyptus. The container may be (a) collapsible, formed of plastics material or metal and pressurized manually; (b) rigid, formed of glass, plastics material or metal and pressurized by a propellant, e.g. a mixture of isobutane and propane. The dispenser may be as disclosed in U.S.A. Specifications 2,941,696, 2,973,883, 3,217,936, 3,272,389 or 3,295,727. |
