Installation system for cables in underground conduits has holding points in vertical shafts keeping cables in tension using adjustable capstans

The cables (10) are held under tension in horizontal underground conduits (13). They are held near the roof (15) of each conduit, placed well clear of drainage water (17) on the floor of each conduit. There are vertical shafts (14) at intervals along each conduit with rollers or cable leads (28) at the bottom. Cable loops (18) extend up the vertical shafts to holding points (19) keeping the cables in tension using adjustable capstans (29). Each capstan has two drums with many circumferential grooves and the cable may make many turns round the two drums.
