PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method which enables a greater number of color expressions by a minimum number of inks. SOLUTION: In this image forming method, a printing mode is set at step S20, and when ink colors installed on a recording head are not adapted for the printing mode, a user is prompted to exchange the recording head at step S22. The color of image data input at step S24 is separated depending on the combination of the ink colors set for the recording head at step S25 to obtain a drive signal for the recording head.
