Separators made according to the parent Specification are provided with ribs which are reinforced on their surfaces by a permeable layer of plastic material or an inorganic substance such as a silicate to which bentonite gel or silica gel may be added to produce permeability. The plastic material may consist of phenolic, cresylic, vinyl, styrene or polyethylene resins, nitrocellulose, rubber or pitch which may be applied in solution to which may be added a small quantity of bentonite gel or silica gel. The reinforcing material may be applied to the ribs after their formation or it may be applied to the separator sheet along lines subsequently forming the ribs. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus for applying the reinforcing material comprising rollers C1, C2 having on their surfaces grooves and ribs respectively which engage the upper and lower surfaces of the ribs on the sheet D. A receptacle S contains the reinforcing material which is fed to the grooves in the roller C1 by which it is applied to the upper surfaces of the ribs. If the under surfaces of the ribs are to be treated a roller C3 dips into a vessel V containing the material and applies it to the ribs on the roller C2. |
