A hollow, plastic keeper tube (1) for gathering sausage skin sections (2), typically with overlaps, is made from material exhibiting shape reversion character to enable the keeper to be reversibly flattened by evacuating the tube into a ribbon shape, measuring at mostpir between crease lines (4,5). Tubes of circular cross section, designed as keepers for intestinal or synthetic sausage skin sleeves, are made from a reversibly deformable material which can be temporarily flattened (i.e. after loading the skins), for convenience in storage or conveyance to local or remote, compatible sausage filling machines. The flattening can be achieved e.g. by closing one end of the tube and drawing a vacuum. The flattened articles can optionally themselves be folded or rolled but finally resume or click back into their original (i.e. filling machine-compatible) shape, e.g. by pressing on the ribbon edges, to enable transfer of the skins to the sausage filling machine. A version of the invention is claimed in which the tube consists of a pair of half tubes which can be pressed reversibly into close-fitting shells.
