The method for controlling the periodic regeneration of a particle filter (7) in the exhaust (2) of a diesel engine (1) comprises measuring the temperature in the filter and adjustment of the residual oxygen level in the exhaust gas so that the measured combustion temperature does not exceed a defined ceiling. The engine has an adjustable burnt gas recirculation circuit (3). The adjustment is obtained by modifying the engine richness by varying the recirculation rate of the exhaust gas by acting on a valve (12), by means of a computer (5), in the inlet of a turbine bypass in the engine exhaust.
