The exhaust gas cleaning device has a a catalyzer (3) inserted in the exhaust gas line (2) from the engine (1) and a catalytic fuel reformer (7), supplied with fuel and a partial exhaust gas flow and connected to exhaust gas line on input side of catalyzer. The catalytic fuel reformer has a heating device with 2 heating stages (6a,6b) respectively positioned upstream and downstream of its fuel feed (12). An Independent claim for an exhaust gas cleaning method for an IC engine is also included.
