PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ID authentication system for a magnetic recording medium and an ID assignment method, capable of effectively preventing falsification. SOLUTION: This ID authentication system for a magnetic recording medium plays back the magnetic recording medium by using an MR head H, and is provided with: a data acquiring means 12 for acquiring beforehand data on thermal asperity or thermal cooling; a data encoding means 13 for encoding the acquired data on the basis of a specified rule and outputting the recorded data as an ID data of each magnetic recording medium; an ID data recording means 14 for recording the ID data in an ID recording medium 31; and an ID data collating means for collating the reproduced data about the thermal asperity or thermal cooling obtained by playing back the magnetic recording medium by using the MR head H with the ID data recorded on the ID recording medium 31.
