The clip type stopper assembly for the mouth of a container has a retaining clip (10) mounted on a first pivot (11) to accommodate a stopper (8), and a first operating clip (13) mounted on a second pivot (14). The first pivot is located in an eye (12) in the operating lever, and the second pivot in an annular, one-piece holding element (15) fitted on the bottle. At least one support element is provided on the holding element to support the stopper assembly on the thickened edge (7) of the mouth. In addition, an outwards protruding operating lever (16) is provided on the first operating clip. An independent claim is included for a container whereby the outside diameter of the mouth edge is at most as large as the outside diameter of the cylindrical neck section.
