<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a cleaning time for cleaning soil on a contact type transfer roller, as for an image forming apparatus using the contact type transfer roller to transfer a toner image to a continuous medium. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a retreat mechanism (35) of performing an attaching/detaching operation of the transfer roller (16) for transferring the toner image formed on a photoreceptor drum (12) to the continuous medium (25), and when the continuous medium (25) is absent, the attaching/detaching operation of the transfer roller (16) is performed several times, and the transfer roller is mechanically cleaned. The image forming apparatus is provided with mechanisms (50 and 60) of preventing the toner lying outside a printing area on the photoreceptor drum (12) from sticking to the transfer roller (16). Besides, the apparatus is provided with a pair of transfer rollers (16-1 and 16-2) and a shift mechanism (38).
