PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote controller capable of more easily and rapidly setting a key code than heretofore. SOLUTION: A group of key codes for television receivers and a group of key codes for VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) by every manufacturer are preset in a ROM 30. When an infrared signal including a key code corresponding to an optional operation key is emitted from the remote controller 50 exclusive for electronic equipment to be a control target, the infrared signal is received by a phototransistor 18. The received infrared signal is inputted in a CPU 26 after being converted into a pulse electric signal by a receiving circuit 20. The CPU 26 extracts the key code from the inputted pulse electric signal and detects the group of key codes including the key code from the inside of the ROM 30. Then, code selection information representing the detected group of key codes is stored in a RAM 28. Thus, the key code compatible to the electronic equipment to be the control target is allocated to the respective operation keys 12. Thus, the key code can easily and rapidly be set.
