A vehicle airbag system (8) includes a panel (10) having a breakaway door (16), and an airbag housing (22) that extends behind the breakaway door (16). An inflatable airbag cushion (30) and an inflator (32) are disposed within the airbag housing (22), and the inflator (32) is operable to inflate the airbag cushion (30). The system (8) also includes a tether (40) having a first portion (42) attached to the breakaway door (16) of the panel (10) and a second portion (44) attached to at least one of the panel (10) and the airbag housing (22). Furthermore, the tether (40) comprises natural fibers, such as flax, hemp, jute and/or cotton. |
