FIELD: catalysts in petrochemical processes. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention provides hydrocarbon conversion catalyst including x-ray-amorphous carbon obtained by vaporization of carbon-containing material and having following characteristics: temperature of in-air oxidation start Tso<=320; maximum oxidation rate temperature Tomr<=590; temperature of in-air oxidation end T0e<=630; initial hydrogenolysis rate at 700 in absence of hydrogen-activating catalyst Vs>=2.08 wt % carbon/h; and limiting amount of MnO-4 ion consumed in contact with 1g of above-mentioned carbon in solution <=16 mmole. Preparation of catalyst comprises vaporization of carbon-containing material exposed to energy stream supplied at a level of 50 to 300 W/mm2, precipitation of fulleren-containing carbon black obtained after vaporization, extraction of fullerens from this carbon black with organic solvent, separation of the precipitate, washing and subsequent drying thereof. ^ EFFECT: extended catalytic spectrum, prevented coking and sensitivity to attack of usual catalytic poisons. ^ 26 cl, 3 dwg, 13 ex
