PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for generating illumination characteristic data of the circumference of an image display device and a method and an apparatus for compensating color variance using the same are provided to acquire the characteristic of illumination environment in the circumference of the image display device and record the acquired characteristic when an image is displayed on the image display device. CONSTITUTION: An illumination characteristic acquiring unit(100) acquires illumination characteristic data including information about the type and brightness of illumination. An illumination characteristic data generating unit(150) generates the acquired illumination characteristic data as illumination characteristic data with a data format including a type block indicating information about a type of an illumination light and a brightness block indicating information about the brightness of the illumination light.
