PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption performance under transient running in a method controlling intake air by changing working performance of an air intake valve. SOLUTION: In a mechanism variably controlling an operating angle and a lift amount, a target opening timing TGIVO is calculated from a target operating angle TGEVENT0, a real opening timing REIVO is calculated from a real operating angle REEVENT (B1 to B10), a valve opening timing deviation DLIVO (B11) obtained by subtracting the target opening timing TGIVO from the real opening timing REIVO is added on the target operating angle TGEVENT0 calculated based on the acceleration opening and an engine rotational speed (B12), and the valve lift amount is controlled based on the added target operating angle TGEVENT (B13 to B14).
